Mission Statement

The mission of Glenn Elementary School is to educate alls tudents in a safe, diverse and nurturing environment that fosters life long learning.

Our commitment to best practices and quality instructional strategies will ensure successful learning experiences and high student achievement.

Philosophy

I believe that students need to be taught how to behave in various arenas.  In addition, they need to be given an opportunity to practice behavioral expectations.  Character building opportunities must take place in students' first school experiences and continue throughout their educational careers.  I believe in restitution.  In certain situations, students should be given the opportunity to fix their mistakes.  Also, I believe in natural consequences.  A natural consequence can sometimes be the best reprimand for a given situation.  Lastly, I believe that if students are provided with the building blocks of love, power, freedom, choice and fun on a daily basis, they will begin to make better decisions concerning managing their own behavior.

Teaching
Glenn Elementary School provides integrated and differentiated instruction suited to student learning through the use of Reading Recovery, Balanced Literacy, Reading First data, and benchmark testing. Fourth- and fifth-grade students attend Academically/Intellectually Gifted resource class daily. Third and fourth grade students receive enrichment during the week. Glenn also offers a Wellness Center in Partnership with Duke University Medical Center to offer health care for our students daily.

Meet Our Principal

To the Glenn Community:

Thank you for taking time to visit the Glenn School web site. On behalf of the students and staff of Glenn Elementary School, I want to welcome you to the Internet home of the Koalas.

The staff of Glenn Elementary School is dedicated to the Durham Public Schools goal of helping every student reach reading proficiency by the third grade and closing the achievement gap by 2007. This goal will be achieved by an active partnership between students, teachers, support staff, parents and the community as a whole. Whatever your role in this partnership, Glenn needs you to get involved in the cultivation of our most valuable natural resource—our children.

Over the past three years, our school has made significant gains in building student achievement as demonstrated by our progressively rising NC End-of-Grade Test Scores. As we continue to move forward, we are committed to building and maintaining greatness at Glenn Elementary School.

Currently, Glenn Elementary School has been chosen as a potential recipient of the North Carolina Reading First Grant (NCRF) that can potentially provide our school with $250,000 in order to build the literacy skills of all of our students. These funds, along with our other resources, will support the excellent efforts our teachers and students are making in the area of literacy. Additionally, Glenn is using the RAMP investigations in order to build achievement in mathematics.

The entire Glenn family is excited about the positive influence and support of our newly restructured PTO. This group of dedicated parents are informing, energizing and empowering other parents to become more directly active partners in our school.

Please use this web site as a means of learning more about our school and the people that work everyday to help our children achieve excellence. Additional information is available about upcoming events, policies, procedures and well as contact information for staff members.

I am committed to being available to all of you. If I can be of service in any way, please contact me at (919) 560-3920, extension 20222.

I look forward to meeting and working with each of you as we continue to do great things for students everyday.
